India‘s domestic air traffic declines by 6.34% year-on-year in August, registering 1.21 crore passengers compared to the previous year. Official monthly data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation highlights a broader demand moderation across Indian aviation routes during the traditional monsoon lull.
Directorate General of Civil Aviation reports indicate seasonal travel slowdowns combined with operational challenges at key budget carriers led to reduced overall seat capacity utilization. Market leader IndiGo experienced a market share drop to 65% from 67.4% in July, while crisis-hit SpiceJet saw its market share slide to 1.2% after carrying 1.40 lakh passengers.
How Did Airlines Perform In The Domestic Shift?
Deomestic aviation competition shifted as Air India Group benefited from rivals’ operational constraints, increasing its market share to 26.7% after carrying 32.32 lakh passengers. Akasa Air retained third place with a stable 5.5% share. IndiGo topped on-time performance at 91%, narrowly ahead of Akasa Air’s 90.5%, while SpiceJet lagged badly at 17.9% because of widespread flight delays and operational disruptions during August across key airports.
Civil aviation regulators maintain active oversight regarding financial and operational metrics to guarantee strict safety standards across all domestic carriers. Airline operators anticipate demand recovery ahead of the upcoming festival season across major metropolitan corridors.
