U.S. Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, concluded a historic official visit to Srinagar on Wednesday, describing Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” while commending the ongoing peace and security initiatives led by the Central government and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Speaking to the media after a cordial meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his Gupkar Road residence, Gor emphasised the region’s vast potential. He highlighted that both New Delhi and the local administration have taken decisive measures to ensure stability and safety across the Union Territory.

Marking a notable diplomatic posture, Gor’s remarks diverged from historical characterisations of the region, signalling deeper international recognition of regional stability post-2019. In a significant relief for local commerce, the envoy indicated that Washington would review and likely downgrade its long-standing adverse travel advisory, noting that numerous American tourists are keen to explore the region’s scenic landscapes.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the discussions, terming them a vital opportunity to widen bilateral engagement between the United States and Jammu and Kashmir. Their dialogue focused on expanding economic cooperation across critical sectors, including tourism, horticulture, and emerging technology industries, while also touching upon resolving long-standing legacy issues over time. During his stay, Gor also experienced local culture by taking a traditional shikara ride on Dal Lake.

However, the diplomatic tour drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti expressed strong displeasure over the envoy’s itinerary, alleging that foreign dignitaries are subjected to tightly curated visits designed to present an illusion of normalcy while systematically sidelining dissenting political voices and genuine ground realities.
