The Department of Telecommunications issued an official factsheet highlighting strict IMEI tampering penalties for altering mobile equipment identification numbers. Intentionally changing, removing, or modifying a device identifier violates Indian telecommunication statutes, creating significant legal risks for offenders across the country.
Violators who alter device identifiers, manufacture configured hardware, or manipulate telecommunication networks face up to three years imprisonment, fines up to 50 lakh rupees, or both. Indian law classifies these offences under Section 42(7) as non-bailable and cognisable violations.
Why Are Authorities Combating Illegal IMEI Tampering?
Telecommunication officials emphasize that altering unique IMEI identifiers shields cybercriminals, facilitates mobile fraud, and undermines national security infrastructure. Acquiring SIM cards through fraudulent documentation, transferring SIM cards to unauthorized parties, or modifying telecommunication identifiers carry severe legal liability and strict criminal penalties under updated Indian regulatory frameworks.
Citizens should purchase mobile devices exclusively from authorised retailers and validate equipment identifiers through the Sanchar Saathi portal. The government portal allows consumers to confirm device brand, model, and official manufacturer details before completing handset transactions. Authorities advise using strong biometric authentication and repairing phones only at certified service facilities.
Victims must file an immediate report with local law enforcement and request a duplicate SIM card from their operator. Following mandatory twenty-four hour SMS restriction periods under TRAI rules, users can submit blocking requests on the Sanchar Saathi CEIR portal using police complaint documentation and valid identification. Recovered devices can be safely unblocked through official portal channels using assigned request identification numbers.
