US Pressure Essential to Restrain Israel in Syria

on

Following an Israeli airstrike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in Syria, US Special Envoy Tom Barrack proposed establishing a trilateral deconfliction mechanism involving Israel, Turkiye, and Syria to reduce regional tensions. The attack, which Tel Aviv stated was aimed at preventing a Turkish troop deployment, drew sharp condemnation from Damascus and Ankara. Analysts contend that any peace framework will remain ineffective without significant diplomatic pressure from Washington to curb unilateral Israeli military actions.

The recent Israeli airstrikes on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur Airbase near Idlib highlight the urgent need for meaningful diplomatic intervention. While US Envoy Tom Barrack rightly condemned the attack as an “unnecessary escalation” and advocated for a trilateral deconfliction mechanism involving Israel, Syria, and Turkiye, a dialogue framework alone will not suffice. Without strong, direct pressure from Washington, regional stability will remain out of reach.

Persistent strikes on Syrian military infrastructure directly undermine the interim government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa. This aggressive posture creates continuous instability, even as Damascus actively seeks diplomatic engagement with the West. Furthermore, since the fall of the former regime, Tel Aviv’s strategic focus has shifted from countering Iranian influence to targeting Turkish presence in Syria.

Striking sites near Turkish personnel carries a severe, constant risk of triggering wider military confrontations. Domestic political considerations in Israel also frequently incentivize military action, rendering voluntary compliance with deconfliction mechanisms unlikely without strict international enforcement.

A communication framework simply cannot succeed when one party acts without restraint. To make a deconfliction mechanism credible and functional, the United States must condition its diplomatic and military backing of Israel on immediate restraint regarding Syrian airspace and territorial sovereignty.

Washington must also clearly define red lines against actions that risk drawing NATO allies, such as Turkiye, into direct military confrontation. Only sustained, unambiguous political pressure from the United States can alter Israel’s strategic calculus, making a peaceful resolution and lasting stability in post-conflict Syria achievable.
