Telangana appointment of an Additional Chief Electoral Officer has triggered controversy following allegations that established selection procedures were bypassed. The appointment of a non-cadre officer on October 7 has raised questions within the State’s election administration.According to reports, the dispute centres on whether the State government followed the prescribed process before forwarding a candidate’s name to the Election Commission of India. General Administration Department rules reportedly require a panel of three names, approved by the Chief Secretary and Chief Minister’s Office.
However, allegations suggest that only one name was submitted to the Election Commission without obtaining the State government’s consent. These claims have not been established as findings of wrongdoing.Another concern is that an Indian Administrative Service officer is already serving as Additional Chief Electoral Officer. The appointment of another officer to the same designation has therefore prompted questions about the need for an additional position.
Telangana Electoral Staffing: What Changes Until 2027?
Telangana extended the tenure of seven posts in the Chief Electoral Officer’s office on December 28, 2024, for three years until 2027, covering senior administrative and supporting positions. Additional election-related appointments may be authorised during periods of increased workload or urgent administrative requirements. Such staffing arrangements are particularly important during Assembly and parliamentary elections, when officials handle extensive electoral responsibilities, coordination and administrative duties.
The ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls adds further context to the dispute, as electoral administration remains under scrutiny.Telangana Chief Electoral Officer C Sudharsan Reddy, however, has defended the appointment. Speaking to Telangana Today, he said the prescribed process was followed and relevant rules were observed. The conflicting accounts leave questions about the selection process unresolved. Any further official clarification from the authorities could help establish how the nomination was approved and whether all procedural requirements were satisfied.
