The High Courts across India are set to get new Chief Justices as the Union government has issued official notifications filling top judicial vacancies across major state jurisdictions. Legal experts note that the Centre’s appointment of 8 Chief Justices is aimed at bolstering administrative efficiency and expediting case disposals within the higher judiciary.

Justice Valluri Kameswar Rao from the Delhi High Court moves to head the Patna High Court, while Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge from the Bombay High Court assumes charge of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal becomes Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi takes charge of the Bombay High Court, and Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra leads the Punjab & Haryana High Court. Furthermore, Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra heads the Chhattisgarh High Court, Justice Alpesh Yeshwant Kogje leads the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati takes over the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

How Does India Appoint High Court Chief Justices?

Under Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President approves judicial appointments after mandatory consultation with the Chief Justice of India and state governors. Recommendations originate from the Supreme Court Collegium, which evaluates judicial seniority, performance records, and regional representation before forwarding names to the Union Law Ministry for executive clearance.

Filling top leadership positions resolves prolonged acting arrangements, ensuring full-time administrative oversight across regional benches. Permanent leadership allows High Courts to streamline case management systems, clear long-standing backlogs, and accelerate subordinate judicial appointments.

The notification reflects ongoing cooperation between the executive branch and the judicial collegium to clear constitutional court vacancies. As newly appointed Chief Justices assume their duties, legal communities expect enhanced judicial administration nationwide.
