Deer Collision Leaves Man With Rare Infection

on

Unusual physical trauma involving a deer can occasionally expose individuals to rare zoonotic pathogens under unexpected environmental circumstances. Medical case reports published in specialized infectious disease journals confirm that a driver developed tularemia after crashing into a deer when animal fluids entered open facial wounds following the collision.

The accident transpired along a rural roadway when a roe deer was struck by an oncoming vehicle and bounced directly into the driver’s windshield. The impact shattered the glass, causing multiple facial lacerations while simultaneously showering the driver with animal blood, organ fluids, and soil. Pathogens passed directly into open facial cuts caused by shattered glass fragments. Eight days following the crash, the patient developed high fever, facial skin lesions, and painful neck swelling.

What Infection Did The Deer Collision Cause?

Initial treatment following the deer collision using standard beta-lactam antibiotics failed because the causative bacterium possesses intrinsic resistance to broad-spectrum penicillin derivatives. Subsequent hospital scans revealed severe fluid-filled abscesses surrounding the patient’s parotid gland and jawline. Doctors performed surgical drainage and conducted polymerase chain reaction testing on tissue samples, identifying Francisella tularensis, the bacterium responsible for tularemia, also known as rabbit fever. After identifying the deer-linked pathogen, physicians switched treatment to ciprofloxacin, leading to full clinical recovery within three months.

Tularemia typically transmits to humans through tick bites, deer fly bites, or direct handling of infected wild rodents and rabbits. Contractual exposure resulting from high-speed vehicular impacts represents an exceptionally unusual transmission pathway.

Prompt microbiological identification remains vital when treating persistent post-trauma infections. Specialized antibiotic targeting guarantees successful recovery from rare zoonotic bacterial exposure.
