This critical update enforces recent directives from the Supreme Court of India, making qualification mandatory for educators appointed before the implementation of the Right to Education Act of 2009.

According to official estimates from the state education department, approximately 90,000 primary teachers handling Classes 1 through 8 need to clear this assessment. Following a Supreme Court review order modifying the timeline, educators have three years to achieve certification. Consequently, every eligible teacher falling under this directive must secure TET qualification before the absolute deadline of August 31, 2028.

What Special TET Provisions Apply To Senior Teachers?

TET exemption guidelines provide relief for educators approaching retirement. Under the Supreme Court’s directive, teachers with five years or less of service remaining before retirement are exempt from taking the test. Other affected teachers must qualify, with examination boards instructed to conduct TET periodically, ideally twice yearly at six-month intervals, giving candidates multiple opportunities to meet the requirement.

State authorities have formally requested detailed operational plans from both the West Bengal Central School Service Commission and the West Bengal Board of Primary Education. State officials confirmed that judicial authorities strictly prohibited any further deadline extensions beyond 2028. Consequently, local administration boards are fast-tracking structural arrangements to manage candidate volume efficiently while maintaining national standards for public primary instruction.
