Engineers’ Day 2026: Remembering M Visvesvaraya

on

Engineers’ Day honors the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, the legendary civil engineer and visionary statesman born in 1861. Fondly known as Sir MV, his pioneering contributions helped shape modern Indian infrastructure. He designed innovative flood-control systems, developed large-scale irrigation networks, and promoted scientific planning, disciplined engineering, and industrial development, establishing lasting standards for infrastructure and nation-building across India for future generations.

Sir Visvesvaraya patented automatic weir sluice gates in 1903, which significantly increased reservoir storage capacity without compromising dam safety. This system was successfully installed at the Khadakwasla Reservoir in Pune and later implemented at the iconic Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysuru. Additionally, he developed flood protection systems for Hyderabad following catastrophic river surges, safeguarding urban populations and optimizing regional agricultural irrigation systems.

Engineers’ Day: How Did Sir MV Boost Industrial Growth?

Engineers’ Day celebrates Sir M Visvesvaraya’s vision for technical education and industrial development. Recognizing the importance of skilled professionals, he founded Bengaluru’s University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in 1917. As Mysore’s Diwan, he promoted major institutions, including the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant and State Bank of Mysore, linking higher education with industry to support self-reliance and sustainable economic growth.

In 1955, the Indian government awarded him the Bharat Ratna, recognizing his lifelong dedication to public service, industrialization, and infrastructure development. Today, engineering institutions nationwide continue to draw inspiration from his commitment to precision, integrity, and ethical public planning, ensuring his vision guides future generations of builders.
