New Zealand Approves Free Trade Deal With India

on

New Zealand passes India trade deal legislation following a 93-29 parliamentary vote supported by both the governing coalition and the opposition Labour Party. The trade deal lowers long-standing commercial barriers between both nations, establishing an expansive economic framework designed to boost bilateral commerce from its previous level of nearly four billion New Zealand dollars.

According to New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay, the agreement delivers immediate tariff relief across 95% of New Zealand goods exported to India, with more than 50% becoming entirely duty-free on day one. In return, all Indian products entering New Zealand will receive comprehensive duty-free status. Additionally, Wellington pledged a long-term capital commitment of twenty billion dollars in direct investments into India’s economy over the next 15 years.

How Will New Zealand Reshape Indo-Pacific Trade Logistics?

New Zealand and India aim to strengthen bilateral commerce by streamlining customs procedures and reducing import duties. The partnership seeks to expand trade beyond traditional agricultural goods into manufacturing, technology services and education. Removing commercial tariffs could improve exporter competitiveness in both countries while helping secure essential supply chains against disruptions and broader instability across global markets.

The economic pact will take full effect later this year once both nations complete their respective domestic administrative and legal ratification procedures.
