Mumbai Police are examining the conversation as they reconstruct Wakode’s final hours, while also reviewing CCTV footage, digital evidence and witness statements to establish the sequence of events surrounding his death.
According to the reported account, Wakode told his girlfriend that he had made a mistake and referred to difficulties involving an earlier thermodynamics examination and a subsequent incident. His girlfriend reportedly urged him to remain calm and focus on his next examination.The reported phone conversation is now part of a wider investigation into the circumstances surrounding Wakode’s death. The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the case and is examining CCTV footage, digital evidence and witness accounts to establish a timeline of events.
IIT Bombay Student’s Death Under Investigation
IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode, a second-year BTech student, died by suicide on September 18. Reports say he was questioned during an examination after allegedly being found with a mobile phone, while investigators are examining CCTV footage from the examination hall. His parents have separately alleged that he faced caste-based discrimination and harassment and have demanded the arrest of IIT Bombay Director Shireesh Kedare and Professor Suryanarayana Doolla. The family has also said they regret advising Wakode to ignore the alleged remarks.
IIT Bombay has denied that Wakode had submitted a complaint concerning caste-based discrimination to its SC/ST cell or administration. The institute has also said that no disciplinary action had been initiated against him over the examination incident.The investigation is continuing, and police have urged people not to speculate or draw premature conclusions. Investigators are expected to compare CCTV footage, statements and digital evidence to establish what happened during Wakode’s final hours.
