Russia Backs India’s Permanent UNSC Membership

on

Russia has renewed its support for India permanent UNSC membership, arguing that reform of the United Nations Security Council should give developing countries stronger representation rather than allocating additional permanent seats to Western nations.Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the remarks during the UN General Assembly, where he said Moscow supports India and Brazil becoming permanent members of the Security Council. Russia also wants African countries to receive greater representation in the powerful UN body.

Lavrov argued that Western nations already hold significant representation in the Security Council and therefore should not receive additional permanent seats during any future expansion.Russia’s position places India among the countries Moscow believes should have a larger role in global decision-making. New Delhi has long maintained that the present structure of the Security Council does not adequately reflect contemporary geopolitical and economic realities.

Russia Supports India’s Bid For Permanent Seat At UNSC

Russia has backed India’s push for permanent UNSC membership as the Security Council currently has five permanent members, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, each holding veto power. Ten other members serve two-year terms without veto rights. India has repeatedly sought permanent membership, citing its population, economic influence, UN peacekeeping contributions and growing global role. However, Security Council reform requires broad international agreement and amendments to the UN Charter.

Lavrov’s comments also highlighted Russia’s argument that countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America deserve stronger representation within international institutions.Moscow’s renewed backing comes as debates over UN reform continue among member states. While several countries support expanding the Security Council, disagreements remain over which nations should receive permanent seats and whether new permanent members should have veto powers. For India, Russia’s statement reinforces longstanding diplomatic support for its Security Council ambitions. However, any expansion would require agreement through the UN reform process before India could secure permanent membership.
