Indian captain Shubman Gill has been cleared to play in the first ODI against West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Despite suffering an elbow blow during net practice on Friday, India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that the injury was minor and that Gill is completely fit to lead the side in Sunday’s series opener. The three-match ODI series runs from September 27 to October 3, followed by a five-match T20I series scheduled from October 6 to 17.
The injury scare occurred when a rising delivery from fast bowler Mohammed Siraj struck Gill’s right elbow. After receiving approximately 20 minutes of medical attention and treatment on the field, Gill returned to the nets to face throwdowns, easing initial concerns regarding his availability.
Indian Batting Coach Explains the selection process of Shubman gill:
Addressing media questions regarding team selection dilemmas, Kotak highlighted the intense competition for spots within the playing eleven. He specifically addressed young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal missing out despite his strong form, explaining that established senior openers like Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill currently occupy the top order.
Kotak emphasized that benching talented players is a natural outcome of squad depth rather than an injustice, comparing the scenario to having multiple top-tier wicketkeepers where only one can feature in the final lineup. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the support staff continue to monitor Jaiswal’s preparation, with Kotak praising the young batter’s patience, work ethic, and ability to deliver whenever called upon.
