The Macron G7 oil crisis push has intensified as French President Emmanuel Macron seeks coordinated international action to contain soaring fuel prices and supply disruptions linked to the Iran conflict and instability around the Strait of Hormuz.Macron held separate discussions with US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney before chairing a G7 leaders’ video conference focused on global energy markets. France has pressed European partners to release emergency diesel stocks as governments seek to stabilise supplies.
The G7 subsequently agreed to coordinate the release of 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil from emergency reserves through the International Energy Agency. The release is expected to begin immediately and continue over four months, with a significant share of diesel supplies scheduled for the initial period.
Macron Presses G7 To Address Energy Supply Disruptions
Macron has pushed for coordinated G7 action as the Iran conflict disrupts energy flows, raises fuel prices and creates uncertainty around supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway normally carries about one-fifth of global energy supplies. Diesel markets face additional pressure from reduced Middle East refinery output, Russian export restrictions and wider geopolitical tensions, tightening fuel availability particularly across Europe.
The emergency release has already influenced markets. International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol said oil prices began declining following the decision, with prices falling by about $5 after the announcement. The IEA has indicated that further reserves could be released if market conditions require additional intervention.he coordinated response is designed to increase available supply, reduce pressure on consumers and limit the broader economic impact of elevated energy costs.
However, uncertainty remains because the underlying geopolitical tensions have not been resolved. Governments and energy markets are continuing to monitor developments involving Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and regional oil infrastructure. The G7 action therefore represents an emergency attempt to cushion global markets while diplomatic efforts continue amid persistent Middle East tensions.
