Trump administration has withdrawn US B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain amid heightened security concerns surrounding the airbase. The aircraft had recently supported US strikes on Iran before returning to their home stations in the United States, according to the Pentagon.
President Donald Trump said a potential threat prompted the decision, arguing that moving the aircraft was a precaution. Vice President JD Vance also described the redeployment as an abundance-of-caution measure. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he would not directly connect the aircraft movement to the suspected plot, describing military asset reallocations as routine.
Trump Flags Iran Connection In UK Base Threat
Trump said the security threat near RAF Fairford could be linked to Iran, though Tehran denied involvement. Five British men were arrested near the base on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts, with police recovering petrol but finding no explosives. The suspects were released on bail as investigations continued. RAF Fairford remains a key European base for US heavy bombers, providing strategic access for American military operations across the Middle East and beyond.
A NATO military official said the redeployment would not weaken the alliance’s defensive capabilities. The Pentagon also maintained that its bomber force remains prepared to conduct precision global strikes when required.Analysts say removing the aircraft could temporarily reduce America’s ability to rapidly launch sorties from Britain. Alternative deployments, including Diego Garcia or Gulf bases, could be considered depending on security, capacity and agreements with allies.
