BRS leader Harish Rao has demanded the withdrawal of proposed power charges worth Rs 5,420 crore in Telangana, alleging that the move would impose an additional financial burden on electricity consumers across the State. The Harish Rao power charges demand comes amid concerns over electricity costs and proposals involving Telangana’s power distribution companies. The former Minister criticised the Congress government and called for measures to prevent additional costs from being transferred to consumers.
He argues that households, businesses, farmers and industries could face financial pressure if the proposed electricity burden is ultimately recovered from consumers.Harish Rao maintained that people should not be forced to bear the consequences of decisions taken in the power sector. He demanded greater transparency over the calculations and circumstances behind the proposed Rs 5,420 crore burden.
Harish Rao Seeks Affordable Power For Consumers
The BRS leader also urged the State government to intervene and ensure that electricity consumers are protected from additional charges. He said affordable and reliable power remains essential for families as well as Telangana’s industrial and agricultural sectors. The issue could become politically significant because electricity tariffs directly affect household budgets and business operating costs. Any substantial increase in power expenses could therefore trigger wider concerns among consumers.
Harish Rao also questioned the Congress government’s management of Telangana’s electricity sector. The BRS has repeatedly compared the current administration’s power policies with those followed during its previous tenure in government. The demand comes as Telangana continues to balance growing electricity requirements with the financial health of its distribution companies. Managing power procurement expenses, subsidies and consumer tariffs remains a major challenge for the State.
Any decision involving the proposed charges could have implications for different categories of electricity users. Consumer groups and political parties are therefore likely to closely monitor further developments.Harish Rao’s demand places additional pressure on the government to explain its position and clarify whether consumers will face higher electricity costs. The controversy is expected to remain a key political and economic issue as discussions over Telangana’s electricity tariffs and power-sector finances continue.
