Israel marked three years since the October 7 Hamas-led attack with vigils and memorial events, while Palestinians in Gaza reflected on the enormous destruction and displacement caused by the Israeli military campaign that followed. The October 7 Hamas attack in 2023 was the deadliest day in Israel’s history. Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages after crossing into southern Israel.
At Kfar Aza, one of the communities attacked that day, residents gathered for a solemn vigil. Dozens were killed there and 19 people were taken hostage. Many residents remain displaced three years later. The attack triggered demands for accountability over the security failures that allowed militants to breach the border. Protesters gathered outside parliament in Jerusalem, criticising Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to establish an independent investigation.
Israel Anniversary Revives Security Failure Debate
Israel is marking the anniversary amid political tensions as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects responsibility for the security breach and resists demands for an independent inquiry. The anniversary comes ahead of Israel’s October 27 general election, with the attack and Gaza conflict remaining major political issues. In Gaza, Palestinians face different circumstances, with local health authorities reporting more than 74,000 deaths from Israeli military operations and widespread displacement.
A US-brokered ceasefire reached in October 2025 ended full-scale fighting but has not completely stopped violence. Gaza health authorities say at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire.Israel currently controls roughly two-thirds of Gaza, while Hamas controls a smaller coastal area where much of the population lives in tents and damaged buildings.
Fresh violence was also reported on the anniversary. Gaza medics said Israeli strikes in Beit Lahia and Khan Younis killed at least two Palestinians.Three years after October 7, both Israelis and Palestinians continue to confront loss, displacement and unresolved political consequences. The anniversary highlights how the 2023 attack and subsequent Gaza war continue to shape communities across the region.
