Germany Reaffirms Franco-German Tank Partnership

on

Germany has denied withdrawing from the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), rejecting claims that Berlin had abandoned the troubled joint tank development programme. The clarification follows remarks by France’s top military commander, highlighting renewed tensions between Europe’s leading defence partners.French armed forces chief Fabien Mandon told a parliamentary committee that Germany had decided to leave the project. However, Germany’s Defence Ministry rejected his assessment, insisting that cooperation with France remains active.

The MGCS programme, launched in 2017, aims to develop advanced armoured combat technology to eventually replace Germany’s Leopard 2 and France’s Leclerc tanks. The initiative represents a major effort to modernise European ground warfare capabilities.German officials explained that both countries had agreed to adjust the programme, incorporating lessons from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Berlin emphasised that these changes should not be interpreted as the project’s cancellation.

Germany Rejects Claims Of Tank Project Withdrawal

Germany is prioritising advanced armoured warfare technologies under its revised Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) programme rather than focusing solely on replacing conventional battle tanks. Major defence companies, including KNDS, Rheinmetall and Thales, are involved in the project. However, industrial disputes, development delays and disagreements over responsibilities have complicated progress. The controversy follows another setback in Franco-German defence cooperation after both countries abandoned their joint next-generation fighter aircraft project in June.

Following Mandon’s comments, France’s Defence Ministry clarified that work undertaken on the tank programme remained valuable and that cooperation would continue. The ministry highlighted enhanced connectivity, collaborative combat systems, automation and robotics as important areas for future development. The disagreement raises questions about how Germany and France will balance national industrial interests while pursuing shared European defence objectives.
