President Droupadi Murmu presided as Chief Guest at the 72nd National Film Awards in Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, Gujarat, today. Organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ceremony marked a historic shift from New Delhi. For the first time in seven decades, India’s premier film honours were presented outside their traditional capital venues, placing Gujarat firmly at the center of the national cinematic celebration this year.

Hosted against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity, the ceremony conferred the legendary Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 upon veteran actor Anant Nag in recognition of his transformative cinematic contributions. Key awards spanned regional and national categories, honoring acclaimed directors, lead performers, and technical crews whose storytelling defined cinematic output over the past year. Senior government officials welcomed dignitaries, actors, and filmmakers arriving across Narmada district for the evening gala.

Government representatives said hosting the prestigious ceremony in Ekta Nagar symbolizes national cohesion by bringing Bollywood, Tollywood and regional independent film industries together on one platform. With President Murmu attending, the event blended Gujarat’s cultural heritage with modern infrastructure, establishing a new precedent for moving major national institutional celebrations beyond traditional venues and promoting wider regional participation, representation and unity through Indian cinema and art.

President Droupadi Murmu concludes her three-day Gujarat tour in Vadodara by addressing the 75th convocation ceremony at Maharaja Sayajirao University. During her visit, she also launches Brahma Kumaris’ social and spiritual initiatives, including the Global Spiritual Palace Retreat Centre.
