IIT Bombay Students Seek Systemic Changes

on

Official student releases confirm that the demand for IIT Bombay student death reforms emerged after second-year student Sahil Wakode died by suicide in his hostel room. Student leaders clarified during open meetings that ongoing demonstrations do not defend alleged academic misconduct, but rather focus on fixing systemic deficiencies in campus healthcare, grievance redressal, and administrative oversight.

The signed student charter seeks an independent probe into the circumstances leading to Wakode’s death, alongside the immediate suspension of involved faculty members pending formal investigations. Proposed institutional upgrades include establishing 24/7 on-call psychiatric services, compulsory mental health sensitisation workshops for faculty, and an equal student voting representation within administrative decision-making bodies. Additionally, representatives demanded reformed procedures for Disciplinary Action Committee proceedings to ensure confidential, fair, and supportive handling of academic malpractice cases.

How Will IIT Safeguard Campus Reform Protocols?

IIT Bombay student representatives urged stakeholders to keep discussions internal and student-led, opposing outside political influence on university policies. During an extended open house, the institute’s Director met protesting students, signed their 18-point charter and promised implementation timelines monitored by joint task forces. Students believe reforms to grievance mechanisms, mental health support and faculty conduct codes can strengthen accountability, protect campus welfare and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Executive committees plan to evaluate administrative procedures and release concrete operational updates by the end of the week. These updates will establish clear timelines for implementation, institutional accountability, and structured follow-up sessions between campus leaders and student representatives.
