The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall alert for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana through September 2 due to a new low-pressure area forming over the northwest Bay of Bengal. North Andhra districts—specifically Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Parvathipuram Manyam—face heavy to downpour-level rains. Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant as thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rains spread across both states.

The IMD highlighted North Andhra Pradesh as the primary impact zone for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Parvathipuram Manyam districts are under high alert for heavy downpours accompanied by thunder and lightning. Light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy spells is also predicted across Rayalaseema and parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh through September 2.

IMD Explanation on El Niño: 

Meteorologists attribute the reduced rainfall this monsoon season compared to last year primarily to the El Niño phenomenon. While low-pressure systems formed in the Bay of Bengal earlier in the season, several tracking upstream failed to deliver widespread precipitation to the Telugu states. Overall rainfall figures reflected significant regional deficits compared to historical averages, making the latest spell critical for agricultural activities.

Telangana is projected to experience light to moderate rainfall across several districts over the coming days. Weather experts warn of scattered thunderstorms, sudden cloudbursts, and lightning. Disaster management teams have advised residents living in low-lying and flood-prone urban/rural sectors across Telangana to stay cautious against potential waterlogging.
