Jurala Canal Gets Relief Amid Protests

on

Authorities at the Priyadarshini Jurala Project today opened the head regulators to discharge irrigation supplies after the Jurala Right Canal gets water to protect thousands of acres of standing paddy crops across Jogulamba Gadwal district.

The sudden release provided immediate relief to local agricultural communities who spent days staging intense demonstrations demanding canal water to save their drying fields. Upstream rainfall boosted reservoir inflows to approximately 2,687 cusecs, creating sufficient storage head for project engineers to initiate canal discharge operations safely.

What Prompted Authorities To Release Water Into Jurala Right Canal?

Project officials acted after intense agrarian demonstrations and fresh upper Krishna basin inflows forced immediate action. Concurrently, a high-level Telangana ministerial delegation traveled to Bengaluru to meet Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar regarding Krishna allocations. To resolve the crisis and feed the vital Jurala canal system, the Karnataka government agreed to release seven TMC of water at 5,000 cusecs daily over thirty days to stabilize regional agricultural and drinking water supplies.

Local farming unions welcomed the canal discharge while urging irrigation department engineers to maintain consistent tail-end flow rates throughout the remaining crop growth cycle. Official monitoring teams remain deployed along major canal embankments to prevent unauthorized pumping and ensure equitable distribution across all command villages.
