Apple Pay India launch marks Apple’s entry into the country’s digital payments market, allowing eligible customers to make contactless purchases using supported Apple devices. The service has initially launched with Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards.Users can access Apple Pay through iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, while support for Mac is expected later. Customers can use the service for purchases at compatible physical stores, inside apps and on supported websites.
Setting up Apple Pay is straightforward. Eligible customers can open Apple Wallet on an iPhone, select the option to add a card and follow the verification process. Axis Bank customers can also add an eligible credit card through the latest version of the bank’s mobile application. For contactless purchases, users can authenticate payments through Face ID, Touch ID or their device passcode before holding their device near a compatible payment terminal. Online and in-app transactions can similarly be authorised through the device.
Apple Pay India Launch Focuses On Secure Payments
Apple Pay prioritises security and privacy by ensuring actual credit or debit card numbers are not stored on Apple servers or shared with merchants during transactions. Instead, the service uses device-specific information and transaction-based security measures. At launch in India, Apple Pay supports eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards, while RuPay cards are currently unsupported, separating the service from India’s widely used UPI-based payment ecosystem.
The Apple Pay India launch gives Apple device users another option for digital transactions while expanding competition in India’s rapidly developing payments market. For Axis Bank customers, the integration reduces the need to repeatedly enter card information during supported transactions. Users can continue receiving eligible rewards and benefits associated with their Axis Bank credit cards when paying through Apple Pay.Apple’s launch therefore combines contactless convenience, biometric authentication and card-based payments as the company expands its financial services presence in India.
