Reports indicate that Apple is developing a revamped spatial computing device under codename N224, but consumers may need to wait until late 2028 or early 2029 for an official commercial release.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman stated in his Power On report that the revamped N224 model is in early development and will likely not arrive until late 2028 or 2029 at the earliest. This extended timeline follows Apple shelving earlier headset iterations codenamed N107, N100, and N109 to realign its wearable hardware strategy.
What New Design Changes Is Apple Testing For Codename N224?
Apple engineers are evaluating four distinct hardware concepts aimed at reducing total device weight and manufacturing costs. These explorations include utilizing titanium, plastic, and alternative lightweight alloys, alongside offloading battery and compute components into a standalone external puck similar to Meta’s recent VR designs.
Apple is prioritizing display-free smart glasses targeted for a late 2027 debut to directly compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban products, while also exploring camera-equipped AirPods and health-tracking bands. Organizational realignments under hardware engineering chief Johny Srouji have moved the Vision group lower within the broader corporate structure following staff layoffs.
