Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has registered a fresh FIR to investigate violence during the Cockroach Janta Party’s July 20 protest march towards Parliament in New Delhi. The investigation aims to identify individuals allegedly responsible for violent incidents and determine whether the clashes were planned in advance.Police sources said investigators would examine whether people with criminal backgrounds entered the demonstration and contributed to the unrest.
Authorities are reviewing the possible involvement of 2,873 individuals flagged through facial recognition technology during the protest. However, police acknowledged limitations in the technology’s accuracy, making further verification necessary before establishing individual responsibility. The fresh investigation follows Supreme Court directions that resulted in the cancellation of 17 earlier FIRs registered across police stations in New Delhi.
Delhi Police Seek Suspects Behind Protest Unrest
Delhi Police have launched a renewed investigation following the court’s intervention to identify individuals allegedly involved in violence during the July 20 protest. Demonstrators attempting to march towards Parliament reportedly clashed with security personnel near police barricades. Police alleged that some protesters attacked officers, vandalised public property and damaged police vehicles. However, protesters accused security forces of using excessive force to disperse the gathering, raising concerns over police conduct and accountability.
Videos circulating online subsequently intensified public debate about police conduct and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.Investigators are expected to examine available recordings and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible. The development comes ahead of another demonstration announced by the CJP at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
The proposed gathering seeks Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions.Delhi Police have denied permission for the demonstration, citing concerns about security and public order. The CJP protest controversy has consequently raised questions about protest rights, policing and accountability.Further findings will determine whether investigators can establish criminal responsibility for the July violence.
