Delhi Police has clarified that organisers seeking to hold demonstrations at Jantar Mantar must apply for permission at least 10 days in advance, as authorities tighten enforcement of protest regulations in central Delhi.Under the rules cited by police, gatherings at the designated protest site are limited to 1,000 participants. Authorities said prior approval is necessary to make security, traffic and crowd-management arrangements.
The clarification comes amid continuing INDIA bloc protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties are demanding his resignation over alleged irregularities connected with the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has disputed allegations surrounding its decision-making.INDIA bloc lawmakers attempted to reach Jantar Mantar following a lunch meeting hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Police stopped three buses carrying opposition MPs near the Janpath-Ashoka Road intersection.
Delhi Police Deploys Barricades Around Protest Sites
Delhi Police has increased security around Jantar Mantar and other sensitive areas in central Delhi following repeated demonstrations, deploying multi-layer barricades and additional police and paramilitary personnel. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among opposition leaders detained during the protest. Rahul Gandhi said the demonstrations would continue as the opposition maintained its demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Authorities have also stressed that demonstrations cannot be taken into restricted zones, including sensitive government areas around the Central Vista. The Jantar Mantar protest permission requirement has become significant as political parties, student organisations and civil society groups continue organising demonstrations over electoral issues.
Delhi Police maintains that advance applications allow authorities to regulate gatherings while maintaining traffic movement, security and public order. The latest restrictions mean organisers planning demonstrations at Jantar Mantar will need to factor the 10-day application requirement and 1,000-person limit into future protest plans.
The rules are expected to remain important as demonstrations surrounding the Election Commission controversy continue in the national capital.
