France Rail Derailment Leaves 44 Injured

on

France witnessed a major transit accident on Friday evening after a passenger train derailed in the northwestern region. Official reports confirm that 44 people were injured, prompting emergency medical evacuations and temporary rail service suspensions across Normandy.

The Regional Express Transport train was carrying approximately 180 passengers along the route connecting Rouen and Caen when the accident occurred around seven-thirty in the evening. Initial police statements indicate the train struck an unidentified object on the track near Cléon, causing carriages to jolt violently and derail. Passengers reported shattered windows and flying ballast stones inside carriages as emergency brakes engaged during the derailment.

How Did France Respond To The Train Emergency?

France immediately activated a mass-casualty emergency protocol following the train derailment, deploying around 140 firefighters, multiple medical teams and dozens of emergency vehicles. Among the 44 injured passengers, an 18-year-old woman with severe trauma was airlifted to Rouen University Hospital. Uninjured passengers were sheltered at Cleon Town Hall while medical teams assessed those with minor injuries.

National railway operator SNCF cut power along the corridor and suspended all train traffic between Rouen, Caen, and Le Havre to facilitate rescue operations. Prosecutors confirmed that toxicological screening for the train driver returned negative results. SNCF Reseau and local law enforcement have launched parallel formal investigations to inspect track infrastructure, analyze black box recorders, and determine precise factors leading to the accident.

Prompt emergency deployment prevented further risk to stranded passengers. Technical investigations will determine precise physical triggers behind the derailment once track debris clears.
