Gautam Gambhir Slams Flat Pitches After Historic Guwahati Chase

on

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed strong dissatisfaction with batter-friendly flat pitches following India’s successful chase of 406 against West Indies in Guwahati. Speaking after the second ODI, Gambhir argued that high-scoring encounters featuring five individual centuries undermine the balance between bat and ball. He highlighted the mental toll such surfaces take on young bowlers like debutant Aaqib Nabi while confirming that squad rotation and experimentation will continue ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Gambhir remarked that matches yielding over 800 runs and five centuries might entertain broadcasters and spectators, but fail to provide a genuine contest for purists and coaches. Gambhir highlighted the psychological strain flat tracks impose on emerging bowlers who are subjected to relentless boundary hitting. He specifically defended debutant pacer Aaqib Nabi, who went wicketless while conceding 84 runs in 8.5 overs, confirming that Nabi would retain his spot in the playing XI for the upcoming fixture. Gambhir Concerns Over Bowler Welfare:

Gambhir noted that pitch curators must consider bowlers when preparing surfaces to ensure bowlers are not treated merely as delivery machines in modern white-ball formats. Looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup, Gambhir detailed India’s preparation roadmap, emphasizing that the team will play approximately 20 ODIs prior to the tournament. He explained that experimentation with team combinations and fringe players will persist through the current cycle before settling on a core squad following the next IPL.

Gautam Gambhir criticized the Guwahati pitch for being overly favorable to batters, arguing that tracks offering no assistance to bowlers damage the fundamental balance of cricket. Gautam Gambhir defended Aaqib Nabi, stating that figures on flat tracks do not reflect a bowler’s potential, and confirmed Nabi will play in the next match.

West Indies Captain Shai Hope on 2nd ODI Pitch:

Following a high-scoring defeat against India, West Indies captain Shai Hope shed light on the brutal conditions bowlers faced on the exceptionally flat Barsapara Stadium surface. Despite his team posting a massive 405/7, Hope emphasized that the pitch offered an incredibly slim margin for error. He noted their strategy was to neutralise India’s spinners, which the batsmen executed perfectly.
However, defending the total proved impossible against Shubman Gill’s onslaught. Hope admitted that playing on such a batting-friendly deck required flawless execution, adding that they needed to be much tighter to protect their young bowling attack from the harsh conditions.
