Hardik Pandya Vital For 2027 World Cup, Says Sourav Gunguly

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly highlighted all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s crucial role for Team India’s 2027 ODI World Cup campaign in South Africa. Ganguly stated that maintaining Hardik’s fitness is head coach Gautam Gambhir’s biggest challenge due to the requirement for pace all-rounders in South African conditions. He noted Nitish Kumar Reddy as a potential alternative provided he performs consistently. Former wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel added that tough initial fixtures will help test India’s combination and workload management effectively.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly emphasized that keeping pace all-rounder Hardik Pandya fully fit for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup will be head coach Gautam Gambhir’s primary challenge. Speaking on JioHotstar following the announcement of the 2027 tournament schedule, Ganguly noted that Pandya’s presence is essential to maintaining team balance. The 2027 ODI World Cup will take place across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October 2 to November 21, 2027.

Ganguly explained that playing conditions in South Africa strongly favor pace-bowling all-rounders over additional spin options like Ravindra Jadeja. Because India’s top-five batters do not contribute bowling overs, a pace-bowling all-rounder is required to maintain sixth-bowler flexibility.

Pandya previously featured in the 2019 and 2023 World Cup editions, but an ankle injury against Bangladesh in 2023 cut his campaign short and disrupted India’s tactical setup. (2027 ODI world cup)

If Pandya is unavailable, Ganguly named Nitish Kumar Reddy as the next inline alternative, provided he delivers consistent performances ahead of the tournament. Former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel also weighed in on the schedule, noting that tough early matches will allow India to test squad combinations and manage workloads efficiently.

Why is Hardik Pandya crucial for the 2027 World Cup:

Hardik Pandya provides crucial team balance as a fast-bowling all-rounder, which is essential in South African pitch conditions since India’s top-five batters do not bowl. Ganguly identified Nitish Kumar Reddy as a potential backup option if he maintains consistent performances leading up to the mega tournament.
