Hyderabad Ranks 31st, Despite 600 Liquor Outlets

on

Hyderabad district ranks low in alcohol use despite housing approximately 600 licensed retail liquor shops, bars, and elite drinking establishments across its urban limits, according to the latest National Family Health Survey findings. The urban capital recorded surprisingly low drinking prevalence rates compared to surrounding rural districts, challenging popular assumptions about state liquor sales distribution. The data reveals that high retail store density does not automatically translate into higher population-wide alcohol consumption.

The survey indicates that only 30.4% of men aged 15 years and above in Hyderabad district report consuming alcohol. This figure places Hyderabad 31st among Telangana’s 33 districts, staying 13.5 percentage points below the overall state average of 43.9%. Only Adilabad at 27.4% and Kumuram Bheem Asifabad at 30.1% recorded lower male drinking proportions. In contrast, rural districts like Jangaon led the state with a 61.6% male drinking rate.

Does Outlet Density Impact Hyderabad Drinking Trends?

Industry analysts explain that urban areas like Hyderabad predominantly represent a premium alcohol market where sales focus on higher-priced products rather than sheer mass volume. Furthermore, experts emphasize that NFHS-6 measures consumer self-reporting prevalence rather than overall commercial sales figures. While Hyderabad accounts for substantial revenue through higher product margins, actual individual drinking prevalence remains far higher in non-urban districts.

Among women aged 15 years and above, Hyderabad recorded a minimal alcohol consumption rate of 1.1%. This places Hyderabad joint-lowest among districts in Telangana and matches the national female average of 1.1%. Telangana’s statewide female average stands at 7.1%, driven by higher drinking rates in rural regions like Nagarkurnool and Medak.
