India state-run oil marketing companies have shifted LPG procurement toward US suppliers to safeguard domestic cooking gas supplies. The move comes as geopolitical tensions and shipping disruptions affect traditional Persian Gulf routes. The Petroleum Ministry says increased American imports, combined with higher domestic refinery output, are helping stabilise LPG inventories across India’s retail distribution network.
India restructured its import portfolio after regional tensions and shipping bottlenecks along the Strait of Hormuz drastically reduced regular shipments from traditional Middle Eastern suppliers. To prevent severe domestic cooking gas shortages, Indian refiners executed long-term supply tenders with American energy producers, rapidly elevating the United States to the position of India’s leading LPG supplier.
India US LPG Imports May Ease Household Fuel Pressure
India LPG supplies are being supported by higher US imports and domestic refinery output exceeding 50,000 metric tonnes daily. Longer US Gulf Coast shipping routes raise freight costs, but steady cargo arrivals are helping prevent immediate shortages and cushion households against potential disruptions in the domestic cooking fuel market.
State-run refiners including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum are actively diversifying import routes beyond single-region dependence. By locking in additional multi-year purchase contracts with US exporters and expanding alternative sourcing from African producers, India is establishing a resilient, geographically diversified supply chain to sustain long-term energy needs.
