Badminton icon Jwala Gutta praised the revamped Khelo India Scheme as a “long overdue” transformational step for Indian athletics. Gutta highlighted that the enhanced focus on grassroots sustainability, athlete retention, and structured coaching networks will offer long-term financial security to young athletes while encouraging broader family support.
Former World Championship medalist and two-time Olympian Jwala Gutta commended the central government’s revamped Khelo India Scheme during an official press conference in Hyderabad. Joined by representatives from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATG), Gutta described the updated initiative as a gamechanger designed to overhaul foundational sports development across the country.
The enhanced framework for the 2026–31 period features a significant budget allocation of ₹29,054 crore—an eight-fold increase over previous outlays—with an ambitious goal to scale athlete support tenfold. According to coverage by Telangana Today, the revised policy introduces a collaborative Centre-State operational model aimed at bridging systemic gaps, establishing dedicated coaches’ boards, and building feeder school networks to identify talent early.
The expanded program brings direct infrastructure and training advantages to state regional centers. In Telangana alone, 33 Khelo India Centres have been established alongside 19 accredited academies spanning disciplines from athletics to shooting and cycling. Additionally, the state operates a specialized Centre of Excellence in Medchal-Malkajgiri focused on disciplines including fencing, rowing, and weightlifting.
Officials highlighted that integrating sports with regional educational policy through the Khelo Bharat Niti will streamline talent progression, providing sustainable pathways from local competitions to international representation. Gutta emphasized that strong institutional backing is critical for aspiring athletes and expressed confidence that the scheme’s nationwide expansion will provide families with the security needed to encourage young sports talent.
