Ladakh’s 25 Lakh Flower Garden Opens Today

on

Ladakh has opened Leh’s twin flower fields, featuring 25 lakh flowers at an altitude of 10,600 feet, to domestic and international visitors. Spread across 40 acres at Choglamsar and Stakna, the ambitious floriculture project is described as the world’s highest and largest commercial flower field model. The attraction aims to establish a distinctive eco-tourism destination while showcasing Ladakh’s Himalayan landscape and expanding regional tourism opportunities.

Developed by the Ladakh Agriculture Department, the gardens feature over 24 lakh Lilium stems and one lakh Gladiolus flowers cultivated specifically to thrive in high-altitude climatic conditions. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena inaugurated the facility, setting affordable public access rates at 25 rupees for adults and 10 rupees for children to encourage widespread visitation. Beyond tourist recreation, the Choglamsar site functions as a practical training center, teaching local youth and farmers scientific floriculture, harvesting techniques, and post-harvest management.

How Can Ladakh’s Floral Tourism Benefit Local Communities?

Ladakh plans to transfer management of its blooming flower fields to local self-help groups and cooperative societies, creating new livelihood opportunities. Premium Lilium stems command strong wholesale prices in domestic and international markets, offering farmers an alternative income source beyond traditional seasonal agriculture. The initiative could diversify Ladakh’s economy beyond trekking tourism, strengthen community participation, promote commercial floriculture and establish a sustainable agricultural model supporting long-term regional economic growth.

The gardens welcome visitors starting September 18, 2026, with prime Lilium and Gladiolus displays expected to maintain vibrant colors throughout the autumn season.
