Munch Murugan; Devotees Offer Chocolates As Prasadam

on

Do you know about Munch Murugan? The Chettikulangara Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple in Alleppey, Kerala, has captured wide attention online for offering Munch chocolate bars as sacred prasadam to Lord Murugan. Known locally as ‘Munch Murugan’, the deity receives boxes of chocolates from devotees. Priests offer these bars to the deity alongside traditional flowers and sandalwood before redistributing them to worshippers, a tradition believed to have started when a sick child was cured after offering a Munch bar.

At the Thekkan Palani Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple in Alappuzha, Kerala, worshippers present boxes of Munch chocolate bars as sacred offerings to Lord Murugan. Popularly known as ‘Munch Murugan,’ the deity is worshipped in his childhood form. According to local belief, the practice originated years ago when a young boy who fell ill offered his favorite Munch bar to the deity and subsequently recovered. Since then, devotees visit the temple offering chocolates to pray for health, fulfillment of vows, and academic success for their children.

Speciality of Munch Murugan temple:

Unlike traditional South Indian temples that distribute payasam, laddoo, or panchamritam, priests at this shrine ritualistically offer the Munch bars to Lord Murugan during daily prayers. After consecration, the priests return the chocolates to devotees along with traditional offerings like flowers and sandalwood paste. Rather than individual bars, many devotees bring whole cartons of Munch chocolates, which the temple management redistributes among visiting pilgrims and children.

The unique tradition gained widespread attention after travel vloggers and content creators shared video clips of the temple on social media platforms like Instagram and X. Viewers reacted enthusiastically to the blend of traditional temple rituals with modern candy offerings, with many chocolate lovers expressing their desire to visit the shrine. The temple continues to draw visitors from across the country who arrive specifically to offer Munch bars and receive consecrated chocolates as blessings.
