Myanmar Arrests 6 Year Old Child Over General’s Killing

on

Myanmar authorities have detained 16 individuals, including a six-year-old child, in connection with the fatal shooting of a retired military general in Yangon, according to reports published by state-run media. The high-profile assassination targeted Cho Tun Aung, a former ambassador to Cambodia and veteran military figure, who was gunned down outside his residence on May 22.

An anti-junta resistance faction operating under the name “Golden Valley Warriors” claimed responsibility for the targeted killing. Following the incident, security forces initiated sweeping operations across multiple locations, resulting in the detention of 13 men and three females allegedly linked to the network.

Among those taken into custody were the wife and young daughter of the prime suspect, identified by official sources as Myo Ko Ko. State media reports provided details on the operational arrests but offered no legal rationale or specific allegations explaining why the six-year-old child was detained alongside the adults.

According to investigative findings released by state press, Myo Ko Ko and an accomplice travelled to the retired general’s home on bicycles, carried out the fatal shooting, and subsequently fled to a nearby safe house.

The assassination underscores the persistent urban security challenges facing Myanmar’s ruling military council since it seized power in the February 2021 coup. The coup triggered a nationwide armed conflict, pitting the military against allied pro-democracy resistance fighters and established ethnic minority armed organisations.

While large-scale combat and territorial clashes remain concentrated primarily across rural borderlands and smaller towns, urban guerrilla operations—including targeted gun attacks and bombings against junta-affiliated figures and installations—continue to disrupt Yangon.

Despite sustaining territorial losses in several regional border sectors, the military maintains control over major urban centres through extensive surveillance, armed enforcement, and continued air operations supported by foreign military hardware.
