Pakistan has withdrawn from the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy scheduled to take place in Punjab, India, marking a significant change to the tournament lineup. The Pakistan Hockey Federation requested that its matches be shifted to a neutral venue, citing safety and geopolitical concerns. However, the Asian Hockey Federation rejected the request, stating that the tournament would proceed according to the original arrangements in Jalandhar and Mohali.
Following Pakistan’s withdrawal, tournament organisers invited Bangladesh to replace the team and maintain the six-team competition format. Bangladesh accepted the invitation after being listed among the reserve teams alongside Oman. As a result, India is scheduled to face Bangladesh in its opening match in Jalandhar.
Will Pakistan’s Exit Change the Tournament Lineup?
Pakistan’s withdrawal leaves India, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, China and Bangladesh as the six participating nations in the tournament. The competition is scheduled to take place from October 27 to November 5, bringing leading Asian hockey teams to Punjab. India will aim to defend its title while competing against the other participating nations.
Bangladesh’s inclusion is expected to preserve the tournament’s planned competition structure and provide its players with valuable international experience. Competing against established Asian hockey teams will offer Bangladesh an opportunity to test its performance at a major continental event.
For India, the tournament will provide an opportunity to compete on home soil and prepare for future international assignments. Hockey fans in Punjab are expected to look forward to exciting matches in Jalandhar and Mohali as the participating teams compete for the championship.
