Namibia pulled off a massive upset by defeating South Africa by 18 runs in the opening match of the T20I Tri-Series in Windhoek. Batting first, Namibia posted 163/9, powered by opener Jan Frylinck’s half-century (60) and Louren Steenkamp’s 41. In reply, South Africa was restricted to 145/9 despite Dewald Brevis’ valiant 75. Ruben Trumpelmann and JJ Smit picked up three wickets each to seal Namibia’s second T20I win over South Africa in 10 months.

Namibia established a strong foundation after being put in to bat first at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. Openers Jan Frylinck and Louren Steenkamp put together an explosive 84-run opening stand. Frylinck top-scored with a 38-ball 60 featuring six boundaries and two sixes, while Steenkamp scored 41 off 29 balls. Despite a middle-order collapse engineered by South Africa’s Prenelan Subrayen (3/32) and Bjorn Fortuin (2/17), Namibia accumulated a competitive total of 163/9 in 20 overs.

Namibia Bowlers Magic brings Victory:

Namibia’s bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance, reducing South Africa to 19/2 early in the chase. Left-arm pacer Ruben Trumpelmann dismantled the top order with figures of 3/24, while all-rounder JJ Smit struck through the middle and lower order, taking 3/31. Dewald Brevis fought valiantly for the Proteas with a 50-ball 75 featuring five sixes, but received little support from the other end. South Africa collapsed to 145/9, giving Namibia an 18-run victory.

This 18-run victory marks Namibia’s second consecutive T20I win over South Africa following their maiden triumph ten months prior. The result maintains Namibia’s undefeated T20I head-to-head record against South Africa. Captain Gerhard Erasmus noted that the victory proves Namibia’s capability to consistently compete with top-tier ICC full-member nations on home soil ahead of co-hosting the 2027 ODI World Cup.
