Sweden, Finland Conduct First Joint Russian Jet Intercept
Sweden joined NATO following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, ending its longstanding policy of military non-alignment. Finland also joined the alliance, expanding NATO membership across the Nordic region and strengthening defence cooperation around the Baltic Sea.The new deployment comes days after Swedish and Finnish fighter jets jointly intercepted and identified Russian military aircraft in international airspace over the Gulf of Finland. That operation marked the first coordinated interception of its kind involving the two Nordic countries.
The intercepted group included a Russian transport aircraft and several fighter jets. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the operation demonstrated the readiness and trust established through cooperation between Sweden and Finland.Regional airspace security has gained increased attention following drone sightings, airspace violations and other security incidents around.
