Telangana AI driving tests could soon modernise the State’s driving licence assessment system, with the Transport Department exploring AI-based video analytics at six selected testing tracks. The proposed technology would use cameras and video analytics to assess applicants’ driving performance. Officials expect the system to make tests more transparent and consistent while reducing dependence on manual intervention during evaluations.
In the first phase, five driving test tracks in the Core Urban Region are expected to receive the technology. These include areas falling under Hyderabad, Malkajgiri and Cyberabad. The driving test track at Karimnagar RTO is also included in the proposal.Transport Department and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority officials recently inspected driving test facilities at Kondapur and Nagole. The teams reviewed existing infrastructure and identified changes that may be required before AI-powered monitoring systems can be installed.
Telangana Studies AI Driving Test Systems Across States
The Telangana initiative follows a study of automated driving test systems already operating in other States. A Transport Department committee visited Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha to examine how technology is being used for licence assessments. The committee subsequently submitted its findings to Telangana authorities. Based on those observations, officials are working on plans to modernise selected driving tracks and introduce AI-based evaluation.
For applicants, the proposed system could mean that driving performance is assessed through standardised technological parameters rather than relying mainly on individual evaluators. Officials believe this approach can improve consistency and limit human intervention. The initiative is also being positioned as part of Telangana’s broader road-safety efforts. Better assessment of driving skills before licences are issued could help ensure applicants demonstrate the abilities required to handle vehicles and navigate traffic safely.
However, the project remains at the planning and infrastructure-assessment stage, and authorities have not announced an implementation date.If introduced, Telangana AI driving tests would represent another step towards digitising transport services, combining automated monitoring with licence assessments to improve transparency, consistency and road-safety standards across selected testing centres.
