The UP Rajya Sabha election 2026 concluded in Lucknow on Friday, with all ten candidates declared elected unopposed. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) won two seats in the Upper House of Parliament. As no additional candidates remained in the contest, the election concluded without a voting process.
Returning Officer and Special Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Ajit Verma, announced the election results. Following the declaration, the winning candidates and their authorised representatives received their election certificates at the Assembly complex in Lucknow. The process was conducted under the supervision of election officials.
The biennial elections were necessitated by the completion of the terms of ten Rajya Sabha members representing Uttar Pradesh on November 25. The election process was initiated to fill these upcoming vacancies and ensure continued representation of the state in the Upper House of Parliament.
Why Were Rajya Sabha Seats Vacated in UP?
Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh saw the BJP retain eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) previously held one seat each. With the BSP not fielding a candidate, the final allocation gave the BJP eight seats and the Samajwadi Party two seats in the Rajya Sabha.
The unopposed election of all ten candidates brought the biennial election process to a smooth conclusion. The newly elected members are expected to represent Uttar Pradesh’s interests in Parliament and raise important legislative issues concerning the state. Their parliamentary terms are scheduled to begin following the completion of the outgoing members’ terms in late November.
