UPI transactions rise by 18% in total monetary value year-on-year during September 2026, reaching a massive cumulative threshold of 29.37 lakh crore rupees. Official data released by the National Payments Corporation of India highlights that the digital payment network maintained exceptional operational momentum nationwide, driven by robust consumer participation and expanding retail adoption ahead of the major festive season.
The Unified Payments Interface platform processed 24.07 billion individual transactions throughout September, registering a 23% year-on-year volume surge. The network crossed a significant technical benchmark by handling an average of 802 million transactions per day, demonstrating the resilience and reliability of India’s core digital payments infrastructure.
Why Did Trade Bodies Withdraw Their Proposed No UPI Day Protest?
Traders called off the proposed protest following extensive discussions led by Parliament member Praveen Khandelwal and the Confederation of All India Traders. Officials clarified that over 96% of merchant transactions fall below two thousand rupees, ensuring they incur zero Merchant Discount Rate and zero Goods and Services Tax liabilities. Furthermore, merchants with monthly receipts under one lakh rupees remain fully exempt from processing charges.
The Immediate Payment Service also recorded impressive growth, expanding 18% year-on-year to process 7.06 lakh crore rupees in value. Financial analysts note that the steady expansion across retail and interbank payment systems reflects deep structural integration of digital financial channels across urban and rural markets alike.
