WhatsApp is reportedly testing a dedicated Contacts tab designed to streamline how users search for acquaintances and manage personal interactions. The Meta-owned messaging platform is actively developing this centralized section to enhance user navigation and offer immediate visibility into contact activity. Located within the main application interface, the new tab brings together essential communication tools, real-time availability status updates, and interactive personal reminders into one accessible directory.
The updated interface incorporates a green dot indicator on profile pictures, signaling when contacts are currently online and active on the platform. Furthermore, the tab introduces automated birthday reminders for saved contacts, marking special occasions with distinct indicators directly within the list. Users can also access convenient functional shortcuts to start calls, send direct messages, or manage contact settings without navigating away from the screen.
How Does WhatsApp Green Dot Indicator Show Online Status?
The green dot indicator provides a visual representation of real-time user presence, replacing traditional text labels within individual chat screens on WhatsApp. This visual cue allows users to quickly identify available friends before initiating conversations. By displaying status indicators directly inside the dedicated contacts directory, WhatsApp simplifies user interactions while maintaining standard privacy controls that allow individuals to easily manage their online visibility settings across the messaging platform.
The dedicated Contacts tab is currently under active development and internal testing within recent Android beta builds. Developers plan to refine the interface and privacy controls based on beta user feedback before initiating a full public rollout. Once testing concludes, Meta will release the feature to global Android and iOS users through standard application store updates.
