Why Teachers’ Day Celebrated On September 5?

on

Every year on September 5, educational institutions across India observe National Teachers’ Day with enthusiasm and respect. Known locally as Shikshak Divas, Teachers Day 2026 September 5 honors the contribution of educators who guide students and build the foundation of the nation.

The national observance coincides with the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. He was an esteemed philosopher, statesman, and academician who served as India’s first Vice President and second President. Throughout his distinguished public life, Dr Radhakrishnan maintained a profound passion for teaching and student mentorship.

How Did Teachers’ Day Tradition Begin In 1962?

When Dr Radhakrishnan assumed the presidency of India in 1962, a group of former students and friends approached him requesting permission to celebrate his birthday publicly. Instead of accepting personal accolades, he requested that the 5th of September be dedicated to honoring teachers across the nation and will be celebrated as Teachers’ day.

Students host cultural programs, performances, and special ceremonies to express gratitude to their mentors. In many schools, senior students temporarily take on teaching duties to experience classroom management, while the government confers prestigious National Awards to outstanding teachers for excellence in education.

The annual celebration highlights the sacred bond between teachers and students in Indian culture. By celebrating Teachers’ Day 2026 September 5, the nation reaffirms its commitment to honoring knowledge, academic dedication, and the transformative impact of educators on future gen
