YS Sharmila Renews Demand For CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Exit

on

YS Sharmila has reiterated her demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, intensifying the Congress campaign over the voter-roll revision controversy. The Andhra Pradesh Congress chief alleged that the Election Commission had compromised its independence and claimed around 13 crore voters were affected by deletions nationwide. She demanded restoration of eligible voters’ names, an inquiry into the allegations and accountability if wrongdoing is established.

Her remarks come amid opposition protests against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Congress and other opposition parties have questioned the revision process, arguing that genuine voters could be excluded and demanding safeguards to protect voting rights.Sharmila has also accused Gyanesh Kumar of acting in a partisan manner. These are political allegations. The Election Commission has denied claims that voter-roll revisions are politically motivated and maintains that the exercise is conducted under legal procedures to improve electoral rolls.

YS Sharmila Seeks Accountability Over Voter Roll Revision

YS Sharmila has intensified her criticism of the voter-roll revision process as opposition groups organise demonstrations in several cities demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and changes to the exercise. Congress has focused its campaign on electoral transparency and voter inclusion. The Election Commission has defended the revision, saying verification and removal of ineligible entries are necessary to maintain accurate electoral rolls, while rejecting allegations of systematic manipulation.

Sharmila’s renewed demand adds to political pressure surrounding the Chief Election Commissioner as opposition parties coordinate protests and seek scrutiny of electoral procedures. The dispute is likely to remain significant as voter-list verification continues. For citizens, the central issue is whether eligible voters remain registered while inaccurate or ineligible entries are addressed through transparent procedures. With the opposition and Election Commission defending different positions, calls for transparency, safeguards and accountability are expected to remain at the centre of the national electoral debate.
